Who said she can’t do it all,
Walk every step that delights and inspires,
Turn every slippery stone
which sparks her curiosity?
Who said she can’t have it all,
Loving, leaving, waking up to sunshine,
In her eyes and breathing in the light?
Who said she can’t be it all,
Life-giving, grief-bearing,
Creatrix of her life?
Who said…and why is she still listening?

She feels the stirring
The welling up inside
From deep within the darkest places
Which crave for light and beauty and peace
Gathering all this life has to offer
Into moments which propel her forward
Step by step by step

What if the good outweighs the bad,
What if her feelings are not just a fad?
What if she has it within her to see,
What if knows there is more she can be?

What she doesn’t know
won’t hurt her
but it haunts her
aching in her bones and flesh
so softly spread across her life
like a blanket aching
for someone to embrace
©Ashley Castle Barnes
Snagged by jagged rocks
and old beliefs
she clings to what she knows
prays for growth and letting go
but the stars above her show
the way to find and cut
the ties that bind
she’s headed home
